LIMITED EDITION/ONE OF A KIND
I cut this Kazakhstan dendrite agate cabochon a few years ago and carefully stored it away - waiting for the right time to create something with it. I knew that it would have to be a substantial piece of jewelry because the cabochon itself (without the sterling work) measures 2" in diameter. I wanted to add a little edge to the piece, but didn't want to do too much. The stone speaks for itself.
I came across this stone at a rock show about 5 years ago. The seller only had one slab and I purchased it from him. Over the years, I've gone back to him, but he hasn't had any more. It was probably one of the most expensive slabs of rock that I have bought, but I couldn't pass it up. Over the years, I cut a few small ring-size cabochons with the slab, but chose to use a large portion for this cabochon. I wanted this entire "scene" in my piece. The colors in this cabochon are really something special. In this cabochon, I saw a mountain top in the distance with a small tree branch hanging within the view. There are blues, brown, purples, blacks... too many colors to name them all. The dendrites have so much detail that one might think it was a painting.
This is a statement necklace (definitely!) and is created with sterling silver (a LOT of sterling silver). The pendant hangs from a heavy gauge sterling wheat chain and the entire piece has been finished with a soft charcoal patina.
On the back, in sterling, I have etched the following qoute that I believed worked very well with the scene in the cabochon:
"Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point." - Harold B. Melchart
Chain 18" long
Pendant dimensions 2-7/8" diameter
